Family and Child Care COVID-19 Resource Updates

Early Childhood Products

It is vital that the toys and materials your children use are age and developmentally appropriate in order to keep them safe. For example, toys for infants and toddlers or children who are still mouthing need to be choke resistant. They also need to be lead-free and nontoxic. It is important to examine toys to make sure that they cannot lead to strangulation and do not contain small, removable parts that could be swallowed.

Many children are injured annually from toy-related injuries. Choking, in particular, is a huge risk for children aged 3 or younger, because they tend to put things in their mouths.

Manufacturers follow certain guidelines and label most new toys and materials for specific age groups, but even so, one of the best things parents can do is to supervise their child at play.

Here are some guidelines to keep your child safe when shopping for toys and materials:

  • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Stuffed toys should be washable.
  • Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint.
  • Art materials should say “nontoxic” on label.
  • Crayons and paints should have a label that states that they’ve been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
